Market map
A talent market map is an actionable model of the candidate market connecting role requirements, title families, donor companies or environments, geography, adjacent talent, evidence sources, coverage, and next-search opportunities.

Why it matters in recruiting and sourcing
A company list is not a market map. A useful map explains where the work exists, what titles represent it, which geographies are realistic, which search lanes have been tested, and what the recruiter should do next. The map becomes a sourcing control surface rather than a presentation artifact.
Example
For a healthcare data role in Minneapolis–St. Paul, the map separates provider, payer, medtech, digital-health, and consulting donor categories; distinguishes clinical/informatics titles from data-engineering titles; and identifies where healthcare domain depth is a requirement versus a preferred signal.
Common failure modes
- Copying a list of famous companies
- Assuming one job title represents the market
- Inventing exact candidate counts
- Ignoring commute and hybrid reality
- Failing to connect the map to executable search lanes
